Tilly-Wood Street Design Showcase event

Design Showcase: Wednesday 19 June 2019

Thank you to everyone who came along to the showcase event at St George’s Church in Tillydrone on Wednesday. It was great to see so many people and your involvement in the project as a whole has helped develop some really exciting designs for your neighbourhood.

In total we had over 70 people come together from the community to view the concept design and get involved in the activities. If you missed the event you can view the designs online here: link to updated concept design .

Below are some photos from the event:

Design Showcase

The feedback received during the public consultation in March and April was displayed alongside how this has helped us to refine the designs. The community had the opportunity to talk to the project team about the designs in more detail and find out what happens next. You can view the display boards here: link to display boards .

Walk-through of the project area

We took people around the project area to talk through some of the designs and answer any questions.

Activities and fun

We’d like to thank the Tuk-in team from Cfine who put on a fantastic spread of homemade soups, sandwiches and cake. And weren't we so lucky with the weather too!

We also had a bike mechanic from Adventure Aberdeen who had a queue of bikes ready to fix. His handy work did not gone unnoticed and he received several thank you cards from the children who's bikes are now ready for the Summer!

We’d like to thank representatives from local groups who were also on hand to talk about outdoor events, activities and support which included Cycling UK, Healthwalks, Grampian Cycling partnership, Aberdeen Multicultural centre and the Tillydrone Gateway community group.

What’s next?

You can view the concept designs online inclusing how we’ve incorporated your feedback. The concept design will be handed over to Aberdeen City Council and the project Steering Group later this month before going to committee for approval to develop this further.

Thank you again to everyone who has been involved in the project over the last year. We've really enjoyed working with you!

Tilly-Wood Street Design Showcase Event on Wednesday 19th June

What we've been up to

During March and April this year, we collected your comments on the initial designs for the area. The design for the project could strengthen the connection between Tillydrone and Woodside by:

· Reducing traffic volume and speed along Hayton Road and Don Street;

· Improving and widening pavements;

· Providing better crossings; and

· Enhancing public space through greenery and play.

Throughout this consultation period we engaged with over 1,200 people through events, meetings and our project website. 602 people visited the website and we received 425 completed feedback forms. This feedback, following the last nine months of engagement, has helped refine the design into a concept which will be showcased at our upcoming public event.

Design Showcase: Wednesday 19th June 2019

On Wednesday 19 June, at St George’s Church in Tillydrone, the public are invited to have the opportunity to:

  • Drop-in anytime between 3pm and 8pm to view the concept design for Hayton Road Centre, Don Street Bridge, Woodside Gateway, Tillydrone Gateway and Hayton Road Underpass. There will be a short presentation at 7.15pm;
  • Walkthrough the concept design at 3.30pm;
  • Find out about walking, cycling and outdoor activities in the area from Aberdeen Multicultural Centre, TrustLens, Grampian Cycling Partnership, Health Walks and many more; and
  • Get a free health check on your bike from Adventure Aberdeen who will get your bike ready for summer!
  • Refreshments will be available from 5pm by Tuk-In and all are welcome.

    The concept design will also be available from the 19th of June through the project website: https://tillywoodproposals.commonplace.is/

    Wildlife in Tillydrone

    Walking in Tillydrone

    Celebrating the Living Streets National Walking Month this May, we teamed up with Aberdeen Countryside Rangers and on Thursday 16th May we ran the Wee Wildlife Wander Walk.

    We started down at the River Don from Tillydrone and walked to the Seaton Park. The walk was led by Ranger Rob who shared with us some interesting facts about the wildlife in the area and the history of people living and working on the river. Below are a few of our favourite facts:

    Did you know that...

  • The River Don rises in Strath Don and is known for its agriculture and industry which included many mills like Gordon's Mills est in the 16 Century and Grandholm Mill across the river which was a famous cloth mill. It needed a water wheel over 20ft wide to power it. And about 20m in diameter.
  • Among the plants to be seen were Sweet cicely- which smells of aniseed and is edible. The seeds used to be considered as 'sweeties'. Other plants include red campion, pink purslane and green alkanet. Willow is often seen by rivers and in damp places. It is a native species and can support 450 species of insects.
  • Seaton Park used to be a big estate owned by the Hay Family. The manor house which used to be in the park suffered fire damage and was replaced by a fountain.
  • Walking Activities in Aberdeen

    The Countryside Ranger Service promotes biodiversity in the city, and offer quality environmental education for people of all ages and abilities. An exciting outdoor events programme includes wildlife walks, pond dipping, minibeast hunts, shelter building and tree study. Check here for the summer programme full of activities across Aberdeen.

    Walking is free, flexible and fun. Coupled with this, it is proven to have a huge impact on your wellbeing. Walk for 20 minutes a day and experience the health and wellbeing benefits that come from an everyday increase in small steps. Make a small change to your daily routine and add more walking at work, to school, or around your neighbourhood.

    If you’re wondering how to incorporate 20 minutes' walking in your everyday routine check here for some tips.

    #TidyTillyWood Clean Up

    Last month we held a clean-up event that took place along Hayton Road and Western Road with the aim of making the local street environment a more attractive place for everyone to spend time in and travel through on foot, by bike and wheeling.

    Around 50 pupils from Riverbank Primary School and Woodside Primary School joined along local residents representing the wider community-led #TidierTilly initiative. 14 bags of rubbish from streets and green spaces were collected, therefore improving local residents experience when using their local streets.

    Individual actions you can take now

    It’s not too late to get involved. it can take only two minutes to make a big difference to how clean an area is. Next time when you’re going out, take a bag with you (and some rubber gloves) and tackle a grot spot by bagging all the rubbish you can see. You can then bin or recycle this en-route or at home. On average, a black bin bag of rubbish contains 133 separate items, which spread out along a pavement would cover over 100m. Take a friend along for a #2MinuteCleanUp and you will soon find you have got the equivalent of a black bin bag full between you, which is 100m cleaned for you and others to enjoy.

    Upcoming Events

    We’re currently analysing the feedback we’ve received from the recent public consultation and we’ll be holding our next public session in June. Watch this space for further updates. https://tillywoodproposals.commonplace.is/news

    We uploaded the initial designs onto the website on the 26 March for people to leave their comments and feedback. Since its launch we had:

  • 533 visitors to the website;
  • 101 individual responses (left or agreed with a comment); and
  • 588 comments and surveys on the initial designs.
  • Design Walks

    We organised design walks through the area, led by our Urban Designers, to give people the opportunity to ask questions on the street for each design area.

    Attending Community Meetings

    We also attended Aberdeen’s Disability Equity Partnership; Woodside Community Council; and Printfield Community Group meetings and held a coffee morning with Clifton Court Housing to discuss the designs in detail.

    Activities with Young People

    We spoke to young people in the area about the initial designs and collected their feedback. We held a stall at the Fersands & Fountain Youth Club Connection Day where we spoke to 18 children and 12 adults . We also visited Riverbank Primary School and presented at the school assembly of 360 children and delivered sessions to P6 and P7 classes.

    #TidyTilly-Wood Campaign

    As well as the public consultation, we also held a community wide clean up event, in support of the wider #TidyTilly community initiative, which included a very successful litter pick event involving 12 local residents and 47 pupils from Riverbank Primary School and Woodside Primary School. 14 bags of rubbish, from streets and green spaces, was collected, improving local residents experience when using their local streets. You can watch a video for the campaign here: TidyTillyWood Video .

    Connection Day with Fersands and upcoming activities in April

    What we’ve been up to

    On 2nd April 2019, our team joined the Connection Day organised by Fersands and Fountain Community Project to speak to local people about the initial designs for Tillydrone and Woodside. During the day, we held a stall with visuals to show the current street layout and potential changes.

    We talked through the design ideas and were delighted with the level of enthusiasm shown by people of all ages!

    Some of the children had taken part in our Big Street Survey last October and were happy to see that the observations and comments from that session had been included in the initial designs. They pointed out the importance of safer crossings, provided more insightful observations on the interaction between pedestrians and cyclists , as well as suggested to put more bike parking in the neighbourhood.

    We would like to thank Fersands and Fountain Community Project for the opportunity to join this event. It's important to include children and young people in the development of the space they use and travel to ensure they feel safe, and can use the place to play, learn and grow. Engaging young people enables us to understand the unique perspective they have regarding their environments, highlights their priorities and solutions they propose.

    We were very impressed with their feedback and it is great to see the younger generation confident to share their ideas. We will continue the engagement of young people, joining Riverbank Primary School on 29th April.

    This event is part of the Design Consultation which is currently open to public feedback. The comments and feedback from this stage will help us develop the initial designs in more detail over the next few months. You can provide feedback to us by Friday 26 April via:

    Designs go live for Tilly-Wood – Have your Say

    This week the initial designs for the Tilly-Wood Street Design project went live and we held events across Tillydrone and Woodside to involve the local community. Thank you to everyone who came along - it was great to see so many people and to gather your comments on the design ideas. Don’t worry if you couldn’t make it as there is still plenty of time to get involved. Read below to find out how.

    Initial Designs for Tilly-Wood

    Since the start of the project in September 2018 we have engaged with over 1,500 people and run 26 activities and events across the area. Through meetings, surveys and talking to people we gathered all of your comments which brought up the following common themes;

  • Improving pavements
  • Reduce and slow down traffic
  • Safer crossings
  • Enhancing public space
  • Add more greenery/play
  • Reducing traffic volume and speed is vital to the delivery of the overall design. By removing or reducing the amount of through traffic and slowing down vehicles, we will be able to enhance the street environment for people of all abilities to better access the area on foot, by bike and wheeling.

    All of these themes have been incorporated into the initial designs which focus on Hayton Road Centre, Don Side Bridge, Hayton Road Underpass and the two gateway entrances to the area; Woodside from Great Northern Road and Tillydrone Avenue onto Hayton Road. You can see the full design ideas on our website or download the display boards from the event .

    Drop-in events attract 120 people

    On Wednesday 27 March, we held drop-in events at St George’s Church in Tillydrone and the Woodside Fountain Centre in Woodside to showcase the initial designs. Over the course of the day, we spoke to >120 local residents, business owners, school children and received a huge number of feedback forms.

    The sun was shining which was conveniently timed for our led walk of the designs and for enjoying the tasty soup and sandwiches from Cfine’s Tuk-in van!

    Feedback until 26 April

    The consultation during March and April is part of the Design stage of the project. The comments and feedback from this stage will help us develop these designs in more detail over the next few months. You can provide feedback to us by Friday 26 April via:
